As an organization dedicated to supporting school counselors, VTSCA's mission is focused on providing professional development, networking opportunities, and resources to help school counselors be effective in their roles with students. While we recognize that school counselors often deal with issues that intersect with the political and social climate, as an organization it is not our role to make official statements or take positions on particular social or political issues.
Our members come from diverse backgrounds and may have a range of views on various issues. As an organization, we aim to create an open and welcoming environment for all school counselors in Vermont, regardless of their personal viewpoints. We also do not wish to be perceived as a partisan or political advocacy group, as that would undermine our ability to serve all school counselors in the state.
Therefore, while VTSCA will share information issued by our national affiliate, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), we will not make official statements on our own behalf regarding specific social or political issues unfolding locally, nationally or globally. VTSCA may reiterate ASCA’s stance, but will not take an independent stance on such issues. We encourage our members to engage in respectful dialogue and share resources related to addressing students' needs, and ask that these discussions remain professional and focused on supporting student development.
As part of our commitment to ethical standards and principles of public education in a diverse democracy, VTSCA as an organization will maintain neutrality on partisan/political matters to avoid the appearance of partisanship or endorsements. We appreciate our members' understanding on this matter as we remain focused on providing the best possible resources and support for Vermont school counselors.
